Changing Places questions answered

What is a Changing Places toilet?

A Changing Places toilet is a larger accessible toilet with extra space and equipment. It is for people with limited mobility who need equipment to get onto the toilet or to have a continence pad changed.

What equipment does a Changing Places toilet have?

It has a height adjustable, adult sized changing bench and a ceiling track hoist for people who cannot transfer themselves. There is also a centrally placed toilet with room on both sides and support rails, plus a washbasin with clear space underneath. Some also have a shower.

How big is a Changing Places toilet?

The room should be at least 12 square metres, with a non slip floor and room for a privacy screen and waste bins.

How is a Changing Places toilet different from a normal accessible toilet?

Changing Places toilets are different to standard accessible toilets, offering more space plus a hoist and an adult sized changing bench. They are meant to be provided as well as standard accessible toilets, not instead of them.

Who needs a Changing Places toilet?

They are mainly used by people with profound and multiple learning disabilities and people with other physical disabilities. People with invisible conditions, such as neurological conditions or severe continence issues, may also need them, and the extra space helps carers too.

How do I find a Changing Places toilet near me?

Use the official Changing Places map, where you can search by location and filter by things like venue type, room size and whether a toilet is open now. Each listing shows opening hours and how to contact the venue.

Should I bring my own sling to a Changing Places toilet?

Yes. The Changing Places Consortium advises carrying your own sling for health and safety reasons, and contacting the venue before a first visit to talk through your needs.

Do I need a RADAR key for a Changing Places toilet?

The official FAQ explains how to get a RADAR key: contact the access officer at your local council, or buy one direct from RADAR for a small charge if the council cannot help. It does not say every Changing Places toilet needs one, so check the venue's details before you go.

Do new buildings have to include a Changing Places toilet?

Yes, in England. Government changes to building rules require Changing Places toilets in new large public buildings, and in those having a major refurbishment, such as places of assembly or entertainment holding 350 or more people, shopping centres and retail parks of 30,000 square metres or more, and stadia, theme parks and zoos holding over 2,000 people.

When did the Changing Places building regulations rule start?

The requirement was added to Approved Document M volume 2, which applies in England only. The amended guidance took effect on 1 January 2021, with exceptions for building work already under way or notified before then.

What is a Space to Change toilet?

Space to Change is a concept from the Firefly campaign for smaller buildings and refurbishments where there is not room for a full Changing Places toilet. It is a wheelchair accessible toilet of at least 7.5 square metres (3m by 2.5m minimum) with a hoist and a height adjustable, adult sized changing bench added.

Are there other adult changing facilities that are not full Changing Places toilets?

Yes. The Changing Places website lists some venues offering adult changing facilities with some, but not all, of the features of a Changing Places toilet.
